Where Apple Maps ads appear, and what they look like

The short answer

Apple Maps ads appear in two places: at the top of search results, where only one ad shows per result set, and in Suggested Places before someone types. Depending on the query, your ad renders with one image, three images or text only, and a customer can get directions, call, open your website, view photos, share or download your app in one tap.

Before you decide whether to advertise, know exactly what you are buying. This is what a customer sees.

Placement one: the top of search results

Someone opens Maps and searches "sporting goods", "restaurants" or your competitor's name. They get a list of nearby results. One ad sits at the top, clearly labelled, and the advertised business gets a highlighted pin on the map.

One is the whole point. No stack of sponsored listings above the real results, so the slot is scarce and the results below it stay trustworthy.

This is the high-intent moment. The person has typed what they want and is choosing where to go.

Placement two: Suggested Places

Before anyone types, Maps suggests places based on what is popular nearby and what the person searched recently. Your ad can appear at the top of that list.

Different job. In search results you win a decision already being made. In Suggested Places you create the decision, in front of someone who opened the map but has not decided what they want.

Restaurants, cafes, retail, entertainment: businesses that benefit from impulse should think hard about this placement.

Three ad formats

Depending on the query, your ad renders one of three ways:

  • Three images. A strip of photos from your place card.
  • One image. A single photo with your details.
  • Text only. No image.

You do not pick the format. The query does. That is why your place card photos matter so much: when the image formats fire, whatever you uploaded is your ad.

Every format carries a short promotional message you write, plus your listing's standard information: category, distance, price level, hours and rating.

What a customer can do from your ad

Six actions, one tap each:

  • Get directions
  • Call you
  • Open your website
  • View your photos
  • Share your business
  • Download your app

You get a count for each.

A tap on Directions is somebody telling you they intend to travel to your door. Apple reports that about one in two business searches ends in an action like this.

What you can measure

Impressions, taps on the ad, and taps on each action, by location and by campaign.

For a single location, that is a clean read on whether the money produces visits. For a chain, it is a per-storefront answer to a question that is normally very hard to answer. It is also the report founding clients get from us every month.

What is not shown to you

Apple matches ads on approximate device location, the current map view, your business information and the search query. No individual profiles. Advertisers never see personal data.

So: no audience list, no individual retargeting, no personal data flowing back. If your advertising edge came from audience data, it does not exist here. If it came from being genuinely the best nearby option, it does.

What to do with this

  • Write the promotional message for a person deciding right now. "Waffles worth the trip" beats "Quality service since 1998".
  • Upload at least three good photos. You cannot choose when the image formats fire.
  • Check your hours. "Open till 7 PM" appears next to your name and quietly closes sales.
  • Watch directions and calls, not impressions. Those are nearest to revenue.

Questions people ask next

How is an Apple Maps ad labelled?

It is clearly marked as an ad at the top of the results list, and the advertised business gets a highlighted pin on the map so it stands out from the other results.

Can I choose the format of my Apple Maps ad?

No. The query decides whether your ad shows three images, one image or text only. That is why the photos on your place card matter: when the image formats fire, whatever you uploaded is the ad.

What can I measure from an Apple Maps ad?

Impressions, taps on the ad, and taps on each action: directions, calls, website, photos, share and app download. All broken out by location and campaign.
