Getting started
Apple Maps marketing: the 2026 playbook
Apple Maps marketing has two layers. Free: claim your business in Apple Business, complete the place card, keep hours and photos sharp. Paid: since August 2026 you can bid for the single ad slot Apple Maps shows per search. Do the free layer regardless. Add the paid layer while the auction is uncrowded and Apple is returning 15% of spend.
Until 2026, "Apple Maps marketing" meant one thing: keep your listing accurate and hope. Since August 14, 2026, it means two things, because Apple Maps now sells ads.
This is the whole playbook, both layers.
Why this channel, in one paragraph
Apple Maps is the default map on every iPhone. Apple reports over a billion business searches a month across the US and Canada, and about one in two ends in an action: directions, a call, a website visit. Nobody opens a maps app to browse. It is the highest-intent audience in local marketing, and until recently you could not pay to reach it.
Layer one: the free listing, done properly
This layer costs an hour and outperforms most paid marketing per dollar, because the price is zero.
- Claim your business in Apple Business. Free, at businessconnect.apple.com. Full walkthrough here.
- Verify every location. Instant by phone, up to 5 business days otherwise.
- Complete the place card. Logo, cover, at least three photos, accurate hours, category, actions. This is what customers see in Maps, Siri and CarPlay.
- Keep it current. A stale closing time sends customers away silently, and you never see it happen.
Most businesses stop here, and most businesses have never even done this much. That is the bar.
Layer two: the ad slot
Since August 2026, Apple Maps shows one ad per set of search results. Not a stack of sponsored listings. One. Whoever wins the auction owns the moment when a customer types "florist" and decides where to go.
What that takes:
- Eligibility. A physical location in the US or Canada and a verified Apple Business profile. Apple blocks some categories outright. Check yours.
- A strong place card. Your ad is generated from it. The free layer is the creative for the paid layer, which is why doing it properly matters twice.
- A campaign. Placement, keywords or Search Match, bids, budget. No minimum spend, pay per tap.
- Reporting. Directions, calls, website taps, per location. The closest thing digital marketing has to a footfall counter.
The timing argument
Two clocks are running.
The auction is filling. Most businesses have not set up yet, so today's prices reflect an empty room. Every mature ad platform was cheapest at exactly this stage, and the prices never came back.
Apple is paying early movers. 15% of ad spend back for twelve months, capped at $1,000 a month and $12,000 total, for advertisers whose first campaign is live by October 11, 2026. The full credit rules.
Doing it yourself vs hiring it out
Everything above is self-serve. The honest trade:
Do it yourself if you have one or two locations, time to learn a new ad platform, and no hard deadline. The free layer especially: claim your listing today.
Hire it if you have many locations to verify, want the credit before the deadline, or would rather your budget did not fund your own education on a platform with no benchmarks. An Apple Maps marketing agency, ours included, earns its fee on exactly three things: speed to live, a place card built to advertise from, and knowing what the auction actually does because it has been in it. That is the founding client engagement. If you want the tools instead of the service, the platform is in build.
The playbook, compressed
- Claim and verify every location. Today. It is free and it is the gate to everything else.
- Build the place card properly once: photos, hours, actions.
- If your category is open and your economics support it, take the ad slot while it is cheap and subsidised.
- Read directions and calls, not impressions.
- Revisit monthly. This platform is weeks old and the ground is still moving. We publish what we learn as field reports.

Questions people ask next
Is Apple Maps a real marketing channel?
Since August 2026, yes, in the full sense. It always drove discovery through listings. Now it also sells advertising: one ad per search, pay per tap, with reporting on directions, calls and website taps by location.
What does an Apple Maps marketing agency do?
The whole stack: claim and verify your locations, build place cards strong enough to advertise from, run the ad auction, and report what it produced per location. That is our founding client engagement.
Should I hire an Apple Maps marketing consultant or do it myself?
The free layer is very doable yourself. The paid layer is self-serve too, but the platform is weeks old and has no public benchmarks, so the learning curve runs on your budget. Hiring makes sense if you have several locations, a deadline like the October 11 credit, or no appetite for a new ad platform.
